Improve your players' first touch, body shape and passing accuracy with Diamond Passing, a youth soccer passing drill that finishes with a shot on goal. Former FC Cincinnati midfielder Corben Bone explains the whole drill.
In this FC Cincinnati Soccer Drills episode, presented by Penn Station East Coast Subs, Corben, FC Cincinnati's Director of Soccer in the Community, walks through Diamond Passing at TQL Stadium. Players make angled passes around a diamond of cones, then play a long final pass into a mini goal, like finishing a chance or finding a forward. A give-and-go at the final cone adds the next challenge.
⚽ EQUIPMENT
• 3 flat cones
• 1 mini goal
• Soccer balls
📋 HOW TO PLAY
1. Set up three flat cones in a diamond with a mini goal at the end.
2. Pass diagonally to the next player, then move to the open position.
3. Keep passing around the diamond. Focus on body shape, pace and first touch.
4. The last player plays a longer diagonal pass into the mini goal.
5. Progression: Add a give-and-go (one-two) at the final cone to set up the finish.
🎯 COACHING POINTS
• First touch: Set yourself up to play a good pass to your partner.
• Pace of the pass: Not too soft, not too hard, so the next player receives it with space.
• Placement: Take your first touch out in front of you so you're ready for the next pass.
