우리는 밤하늘의 별을 바라보며 별과 별 사이의 관계를 읽습니다. 서로 떨어져 있는 빛들을 연결하고, 그 안에서 의미를 발견하며 하나의 성좌를 그려냅니다.

청주시한국공예관의 지난 스물다섯 해 또한 그러했습니다. 우리나라 최초의 공예 전문 미술관으로 출범한 청주시한국공예관은 변화하는 시대의 파고와 여러 현실적인 제약 속에서도, 지역 공예의 터전을 지키고 그 가치를 확장하기 위한 걸음을 멈추지 않았습니다. 지난 시간은 단순히 기관의 사업을 축적해 온 연대기에 그치지 않습니다. 급변하는 문화예술계와 사회적 맥락 속에서 공예관이 끊임없이 고뇌하며 시대를 읽어낸 기록이자, 사람과 공예, 지역과 세계를 이어온 유기적인 관계의 역사입니다.

이곳의 기록들은 그 교차점들을 마주하는 자리입니다. 시대의 흐름 속에서 공예관이 어떠한 선택과 변화로 응답해 왔는지 돌아보는 동시에, 새로운 지평을 열어젖힌 전환점이자 전환의 이정표가 되었던 순간들을 조금 더 깊이 있게 들여다봅니다.

하나의 별은 홀로 밤하늘을 이루지 못합니다. 묵묵히 자리를 지켜온 작가들과 시민, 그리고 시대의 현장에서 마주한 수많은 만남과 작은 시도들이 모여 비로소 오늘날의 묵직한 결실과 유의미한 변화를 이루어냈습니다. 지난 스물다섯 해의 흔적은 걸어온 길을 증언하는 기록인 동시에, 우리가 함께 나아갈 또 다른 내일을 환히 비추는 좌표가 됩니다.

스물다섯 명의 작가가 저마다의 빛을 품은 별이라면, 청주시한국공예관의 지난 시간은 그 빛들이 시대와 응전하며 완성해 온 아름다운 성좌일 것입니다. 그리고 우리는 오늘, 이 다정한 별자리 아래에서 서로의 마음을 모아 더 가치 있는 미래를 향한 희망을 함께 그려보고자 합니다.

We gaze up into the night sky, tracing relationships between the stars. Connecting these distant points of light, we discover meaning among them and imagine constellations.

The past 25 years of the Korean Craft Museum have unfolded in much the same way. Established as Korea’s first museum devoted exclusively to craft, the Korean Craft Museum has continued to safeguard the foundations of regional craft while expanding its significance amid shifting times and numerous practical challenges. These 25 years hold more than a chronological accumulation of institutional activities; they are a record of the museum’s continual reading of the times in changing cultural and social contexts and a history of the organic relationships that have connected people and craft, as well as the local community and the wider world.

The materials gathered here bear witness to these intersections. They look back on the choices and transformations the museum has made in response to the changing times, while also offering a close examination of the pivotal moments that have opened new horizons and marked significant turning points.

No single star can fill the night sky alone. The artists and citizens who have remained steadfast, and the countless encounters and modest initiatives born of their times, have together culminated in the substantial achievements and meaningful changes visible today. The footprints of the past 25 years exist both as a record attesting to the path we have walked together and as points of orientation illuminating the path of our journey ahead.

If the 25 participating artists are stars, each radiating their own unique light, then the history of the Korean Craft Museum is the constellation those lights have formed, confronting their times.
