Jason Issaccs On How He Made Lucious Malfoy His Own

Jason Isaacs revealed the brilliant story behind how he accidentally created the iconic look and personality of Lucius Malfoy in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The studio originally envisioned Malfoy wearing a modern pinstripe suit with short, slicked-back hair, but Isaacs felt a aristocratic wizard would look far more distinct and menacing. He begged director Chris Columbus to let him wear a long blonde wig, dramatic velvet robes, and carry a walking stick with a hidden wand inside the handle. To make the character even more insufferable, Isaacs came up with the idea to tilt his head back and look down his nose so he could stare at everyone from an angle of absolute superiority. On his very first day of filming, Isaacs improvised Malfoy’s famous icy parting line to Harry, "Let us hope Mr. Potter will always be around to save the day," prompting young Daniel Radcliffe to instantly improvise back, "Don't worry. I will be."
