First China visits bring Austrian, Gabonese leaders to Shanghai ahead of CIIE

Global leaders have arrived in Shanghai ahead of the 9th China International Import Expo (CIIE), scheduled to open on Thursday.

Kicking off his itinerary, Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker visited Shanghai’s Tongji University to mark the 55th anniversary of China-Austrian diplomatic ties. He highlighted a century-old connection dating back to 1926, when an Austrian engineer Hans List first taught at the school.

Meanwhile, Gabonese President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema spent the afternoon exploring the Pudong Exhibition Hall to see Shanghai’s economic transformation, celebrating 52 years of close friendship between China and Gabon.

Both leaders, making their first official visits to China since taking office, will next attend the opening events of the Import Expo.
