미 지방선거도 ‘블루 웨이브’… 민주당, 5개 경합주 주정부-상하원 석권… 트럼프 “내 탓 아냐”
U.S. President Donald Trump has acknowledged that the Iran war contributed to Republicans' crushing midterm losses, as Democrats swept key battleground states in a nationwide blue wave.
Our Hong Seo-jeong reports.
A blue wave has swept across the United States in the latest midterm elections.
With Democrats gaining at least 330 state legislative seats on Tuesday, the party has expanded its control to 22 state governments.
The New York Times reported that this marked the largest number of state legislative seats gained by Democrats since 1974.
The Democrats now hold a majority of Congress, the first time in 16 years.
Traditionally Republican-leaning states, including Georgia, Iowa, Texas, Ohio and Nevada, have dramatically shifted toward the Democratic Party.
The Democratic gains in Texas came as a surprise, considering that President Donald Trump carried the state by nearly 14 percentage points in the 2024 presidential election.
The state had also not elected a Democratic governor in more than three decades.
Meanwhile, in Michigan, Minnesota and Pennsylvania, Democrats either gained or retained state government trifectas, giving them control of the governorship and both chambers of the state legislature.
The Washington Post quoted Heather Williams, president of the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, as saying that Democrats had won "historic levels of power in statehouses," demonstrating the scale of the party's gains across the country.
Regarding the election results, U.S. President Donald Trump deflected responsibility, arguing that his popularity had not translated into votes for Republican candidates in the elections.
When asked about his opinion regarding U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance's statement that the reason behind Republican's loss was the war with Iran, he acknowledged that it was partly due to soaring oil prices triggered by the war.
"I think it's largely true because it drove the gasoline up a little bit short term But at the same time, if I had it to do again, I'd have to do it again. Because long term, it's the only answer. You can't let Iran have a nuclear weapon. "
Attention is now on the implications that these sweeping Democratic gains will have for policymaking in the country.
