South Korea has decided to delay its planned tax on cryptocurrency gains by another two years to 2029, the fourth such postponement since the law was first introduced in 2020.
Finance Minister Lee Hyoung-il announced Thursday that the government will consult with the National Assembly on the delay.
He cited tax fairness concerns for domestic investors, as cross-border crypto data-sharing with the United States will not begin until 2029, alongside the need to reflect new trading methods such as staking.
Given high market volatility, authorities also plan to allow a three-year loss carryover, instead of imposing the current 22 percent tax on annual gains above 2-point-5 million Korean won, or roughly 1-thousand-8-hundred-70 U.S. dollars, on a single-year basis.
