A woman gets a request.

Elle's office is the pilot site of a new program that clones managers and replaces them with an A.I. bot. Elle is personally skeptical, but for the sake of her job, she goes along with it and tries to work with her new boss, "Tim."

Things are a little bumpy at first, but Elle adjusts. But then Elle gets a strange request from Tim. The request seems weird but harmless at first... but then Tim's demands get even more outrageous, and not a little sinister.

Directed and written by Joshua DePew, this darkly funny short drama sits at the intersection of technology and workplace culture, teasing out an odd, increasingly dystopian undercurrent underneath the techno-optimism of Big Tech's push into A.I. Elle's former boss Albert has been replaced by a bot nicknamed Tim that essentially learned what Albert does, and is even able to mimic Albert's verbal tics. But Elle's working relationship with Tim evolves in a bumpy, increasingly surreal way, making for a comical, compelling take on an increasingly relevant subject matter.

The storytelling is focused on A.I., but the world of the film is resolutely naturalistic, taking place in the ordinary here and now and captured in sharp but unflashy visuals. Outside the corporate video that opens the narrative, we're not too immersed in the technology's ins and outs. Instead, we focus on Elle, a quiet, somewhat meek junior analyst who will be working with the A.I. boss, who gives her orders over a Slack-like workplace management app.

The writing has a lot of fun with A.I.'s general peccadilloes, such as misspellings, warped human faces and ham-fisted social assumptions. But then Tim asks Elle to essentially spy on one of her coworkers, whom Tim believes to be slacking off at work. Weirded out but faced with Tim's power to fire her, she complies, with actor Mera Caulfield playing the balance between flustered and fearful well while hitting the writing's slyly understated comic notes.

What happens next is a veritable slippery slope of increasingly sinister demands that pull the film into a darker direction, and what was a quirky workplace comedy becomes something altogether more unsavory, thanks to its A.I. antagonist, a disembodied but all-powerful and all-knowing presence with unchecked power over the humans it is in charge of. Eventually, A.I. BOSS reveals itself as a dryly witty and skeptical cautionary tale for our time, when tech oligarchs insinuate the technology into all nooks and crannies of our lives. The film's conclusion approaches the lurid, but it's also a reminder that we can never be too sure what A.I. is learning about us -- and how it may come out in unexpected ways.
