Mario Barrios and Abel Ramos each scored a knockdown in a brutal, hard-fought battle at AT&T Stadium on Friday, ending in a split draw that allowed Barrios to retain his WBC welterweight title.

Barrios, 29-2-1 (18 KOs), controlled the early rounds with his long, sharp jab and distance. A straight right dropped Ramos, 28-6-3 (22 KOs), late in the second, seemingly putting Barrios in command.

But Ramos refused to back down. He steadily closed the distance, slipped inside Barrios’ reach and began landing clean right hands as the champion’s jab lost its bite.

Then came Round 6. Ramos blasted Barrios with a straight right behind a jab, sending him crashing to the canvas. A follow-up right to the temple put him down again, and Ramos stormed forward looking for the finish. Barrios survived the round, but the fight had completely changed.

Ramos continued pressing forward, landing hooks and right crosses as Barrios fought off the back foot. By Round 8, Barrios dug deep and fired straight punches down the middle, forcing Ramos to respect his counters. In the ninth, he found his rhythm again, ripping the body before firing upstairs.

The 11th round showed the toll of the war, with both fighters badly swollen—Barrios bleeding from his nose and mouth while Ramos was cut around both eyes.

After 12 grueling rounds, the judges could not separate them. One scored it 116-110 for Barrios, another gave Ramos the edge 114-112, while the third had it 113-113, resulting in a split draw and allowing Barrios to keep his WBC belt.
