Oil prices have risen to their highest levels in about four months, after drone attacks forced Saudi Arabia to shut down its East-West pipeline.
The pipeline serves as a major alternative export route that bypasses the Strait of Hormuz, raising fresh concerns over crude supplies amid the prolonged conflict in the Middle East.
According to Korea National Oil Corporation’s Petronet, Brent crude has averaged 100 dollars and 40 cents a barrel so far in September, while West Texas Intermediate has averaged 96 dollars and 30 cents.
South Korean refiners say they have already secured enough crude for September and October.
The bigger concern is November.
Industry officials say supplies will largely depend on how quickly Saudi Arabia can restore operations along the pipeline.
Refiners are also considering alternative shipping routes, including the Suez Canal.
But such detours could add around 30 days to delivery times and drive up transportation costs.
At the same time, companies are stepping up efforts to diversify their crude sources.
HD Hyundai Oilbank has tested crude from Argentina, while SK Innovation recently purchased a small volume, as refiners expand sourcing from the Americas.
Meanwhile, Industry officials say a prolonged conflict could further raise crude and shipping costs, putting additional pressure on both refiners and petrochemical companies.
