How is competition pushing vocational education in Shanghai?

In September, Shanghai will host the largest WorldSkills event in history. A total of 1,400 contestants from 74 countries will compete in 64 events. Young people choosing to pursue careers in trades or to specialize in a vocation is becoming increasingly common in many parts of the world, and Shanghai is no different. At a specialized training base at Shanghai Environmental Science School, students as young as 16 are being trained.

The school has been officially accredited by the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Human Resources and Social Security as the municipal training base for contestants competing in “Water Treatment Technology” and “Mechanical Electronics.” Both are WorldSkills Competition categories and, faculty members say, highly interesting fields. Although none of the students at the base will compete in this year’s WorldSkills Competition, faculty from the two programs are leading intensive training sessions in preparation for future competitions.
