"Controlling the temperature is a matter of us, not a matter of the Earth."
Imagine an Earth with temperatures around 10°C higher than today, far less ice, no deserts, and vegetation covering almost everywhere. It sounds like a thriving planet. But it may not be a world where humans can thrive.
During the 2026 China Deep Dive program, Dai Hancheng 戴瀚程, Associate Professor at the PKU School of Environmental Science and Engineering, shared this striking perspective with US college students, using ancient climate records to show how resilient Earth can be and how vulnerable human civilization is.
The Earth may be fine. Our future is the real question.
