Fertigation pumps up corn yields in China's Xinjiang

In northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, farmers are using agricultural fertigation to boost corn yields, resulting in a harvest of about 24 tons per hectare.

The farmers in this demonstration zone say the system, which injects water soluble fertilizer directly into a drip irrigation system, is directly responsible for their higher yields.

According to experts, compared with flood irrigation and manual plant fertilization, fertigation gives farmers more precise control of the nutrient amounts.

Data shows that by the end of last year, the country was using integrated water and fertilizer technology across more than 5.8 million hectares of grain and oil crops.
