Imagine a train crossing one of the wildest places on Earth, with Tibetan antelopes roaming the grasslands and snow-capped mountains stretching as far as the eye can see. Sounds incredible, right? Well, that's where I'm heading next!
I'm traveling through Hoh Xil, a remote wilderness on the Tibetan Plateau. But I'm not just here for the views. How do you build a railway through a place that's home to thousands of wild animals without getting in their way? It turns out the Qinghai-Xizang Railway has 33 wildlife crossings designed to help animals move safely across their natural habitat. I also meet the rangers who patrol this vast landscape, protecting Tibetan antelopes and other wildlife in some seriously challenging conditions.
Then it's back on the train and onward to Yanshiping, a tiny railway station more than 4,700 meters above sea level! The air is thin, the weather can be brutal, and the nearest big city is a long way off. So what's it actually like to work here? I spend time with the railway staff to find out how they keep trains running safely in such an extreme environment.
From wildlife rangers in Hoh Xil to railway workers at Yanshiping, this part of my journey introduces me to some remarkable people doing important work far from the spotlight. And it reminds me that there's a lot more to this railway than the incredible scenery outside the window.
