Africa Is Breaking Apart, and a New Ocean Is Slowly Forming

A massive rift is slowly tearing through Africa, and the consequences could change the map of our planet forever. Deep underground, enormous tectonic forces are pulling the continent in opposite directions, creating cracks, triggering earthquakes, and fueling volcanic activity. Over millions of years, this growing rift could become the birthplace of an entirely new ocean, separating a huge section of eastern Africa from the rest of the continent. But this isn't just some distant geological possibility. The process is already underway, and scientists are discovering just how dramatically the Earth's crust is changing beneath our feet. Could Africa really split in two? And what would the world look like when the ocean finally moves in?
