Riding Yiwu Trends: How Gulf-China trade reshaped a Yemeni engineer and his family's life

"We Easterners are known for our hospitality," says Mohamed Al-Salami, a Yemeni engineer-turned-businessman who has called Yiwu — known as "the world's supermarket" — home for over 17 years. Thanks to booming trade between the Gulf countries and China, Mohamed, during his "bittersweet" journey, not only moved his entire family here but also encouraged all of them to pursue their dreams seeking opportunities in China's rapid rise.
