Shanghai Grand Opera House concludes internal stress testing with Verdi's 'Falstaff' in full-scale

In its final full-scale internal trial before its official grand opening, the Shanghai Grand Opera House hosted a landmark production of Giuseppe Verdi’s comic masterpiece Falstaff inside its flagship 2,000-seat Red Hall. Over 1,700 spectators attended the performance, which marked the first time the venue’s orchestra pit was fully operational. Featuring a massive set design and live orchestral accompaniment, the staging served as a comprehensive stress test for the Red Hall's acoustic environment and state-of-the-art stage machinery—which boasts Asia's largest theater stage at 3,500 square meters and a unique "six-grid" dual-car transfer system for rapid scene changes.

The performance concluded a month-and-a-half-long testing phase involving 10 internal performances across the Opera House’s three main spaces: the Red Hall, Shen Hall, and Mirror Hall. Ahead of its official inauguration on October 17, the venue—architecturally inspired by a unfolding "Chinese Fan" along the Huangpu River—will open to the public during the National Day holiday for guided architectural tours. Following the official opening, the inaugural performance season will feature premier productions of Tosca, Aida, and Der Rosenkavalier between October and November.
