German automaker Audi pivots to China-led AI and smart tech to spearhead its EV transformation

In a milestone restructuring of its Chinese operations, German luxury automaker Audi has announced that SAIC Audi will cease production of traditional four-ring badged vehicles to focus exclusively on "AUDI"—the company's standalone, letter-marked electric brand co-developed with SAIC Group. Moving forward, four-ring badged models will be consolidated under FAW-Audi. Built on the Advanced Digitized Platform (ADP), AUDI integrates Audi’s legendary Quattro driving dynamics with China's leading smart-cockpit and AI technology, making AUDI the industry’s first legacy luxury brand to go all-in on new energy vehicles (NEVs).

To support AUDI's long-term growth, Audi established the Audi Innovation Technology Centre (AITC) in Shanghai—its first full-stack R&D center outside Europe—signaling deep integration with China’s EV supply chain. With NEV penetration in China exceeding 60 percent, AUDI’s flagship E7X model became the first EV from a legacy luxury brand to surpass 10,000 units sold in its first 100 days. Meanwhile, SAIC Audi confirmed that current four-ring models (A5L Sportback, A7L, and Q6) will continue sales through late 2027, with full lifetime after-sales service fully guaranteed.
