Why do mechanics call these tools widowmakers?! 🛑🔧
When replacing the shock absorbers or lowering a car, you have to disassemble the MacPherson strut. To do this, the massive coil spring must be heavily compressed to relieve the tension on the top mounting bolt. While professional shops use heavy, wall-mounted hydraulic presses for safety, DIY mechanics often use these cheap, clamp-on tools.
They hook onto the opposing coils and are tightened down with an impact gun to squeeze the spring. However, that metal spring is holding back thousands of pounds of force! If the tool slips, the threads strip out, or they are tightened unevenly, the spring instantly becomes a deadly, heavy-metal projectile!
