Walt Disney lost his hit character, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, because he didn't own it. This is the true story of what he did next.
THE TIMELINE (what the record shows)
• Feb. 18, 1928 – Universal and Winkler Pictures sign for three more years of Oswald cartoons (Motion Picture News).
• Feb.–Mar. 1928 – Disney goes to New York for a bigger budget per short; Mintz offers less. Disney learns Universal controls Oswald and leaves New York on March 13.
• Spring 1928 – Mintz has signed most of Disney's animators; Ub Iwerks and apprentice Les Clark stay. The others leave for Mintz's new studio on May 5.
• Nov. 18, 1928 – Steamboat Willie, Mickey's sound debut, opens at the Colony Theater in New York.
• Feb. 2006 – Disney regains the rights to Oswald and the 27 shorts it made, in a trade with NBCUniversal that released sportscaster Al Michaels to NBC.
