At 30, Steve Jobs was pushed out of the company he started in a garage. This is the true story of what he did at the bottom: NeXT, Pixar, and the deal that brought him back to Apple.

THE TIMELINE (what the record shows)
• May 1985 – Apple CEO John Sculley, whom Jobs had recruited from Pepsi, takes a reorganization plan to the board that would pull Jobs off the Macintosh team. The board backs Sculley.
• Sept. 17, 1985 – Jobs sends his resignation letter to the board. Apple later said it was effective Sept. 18.
• 1986 – Jobs puts up $10 million to spin a small graphics group out of Lucasfilm: $5 million to Lucasfilm for the technology rights, $5 million as working capital. That company becomes Pixar.
• Over the years – Jobs puts about $50 million of his own money into Pixar.
• 1995 – Toy Story, the first fully computer-animated feature film, earns more than $360 million worldwide in its original run (reported figures for the original run start at about $362 million and go higher depending on the source and date).
• Dec. 1996 – Feb. 1997 – Apple buys NeXT. Announced at about $400 million ($350M plus about $50M of assumed debt); Apple's own filings put the final price at about $427–430 million including stock and assumed liabilities.
