Barbara Schubert's 50 years leading the University Symphony Orchestra

From her podium before the orchestra, Barbara Schubert has shaped generations of musicians at the University of Chicago. She reflects on how a 1976 grad-school request turned into a half-century career—and why it's still "exhilarating" to step up to the podium today.

Schubert's tenure is being celebrated this May through Opus 50, a season-long tribute from the Department of Music culminating in a weekend of concerts at Mandel Hall with nearly 100 alumni returning to play with her.
