Why New Zealand Never Built a Bridge Between Its Two Main Islands

New Zealand’s two main islands are separated by just a narrow stretch of water, yet no bridge connects them, forcing millions of people to rely on ferries and flights to travel between the North and South Islands. At first, building a massive bridge across the Cook Strait might sound like an obvious solution, but this stretch of ocean is one of the most challenging places for such a project, with powerful currents, rough seas, deep water, and frequent earthquakes. A bridge would also need to withstand fierce winds and enormous waves while connecting two distant coastlines across a major shipping route. The price tag could reach staggering levels, and maintaining such a structure in this harsh environment would be a challenge of its own. Discover why New Zealand never built this ambitious connection, what makes the Cook Strait so dangerous, and whether a bridge between the two islands will ever become reality.
