I returned to the butcher shop with a question.

Another package was waiting beneath the light.

The tomahawk had come with two words. This time, the card gave me a reason to return.

“Two cheeseburgers.
One is yours.
Bring the other back.”

I still don’t know who sits at The Table. But tonight, someone expects to eat what I make.

Back in the quiet of the safehouse, the knife moves through fresh chuck. The meat is trimmed, cut into cubes, and fed into the grinder. Thick strands fall into the bowl below.

Onions soften slowly, turning darker as their sweetness gathers in the pan. Buns meet the heat cut-side down.

Then the beef hits the hot surface.

Each portion spreads beneath the press. Fat sizzles around the edges. A crust forms where the meat holds against the heat, until the blade slips beneath it and lifts it free.

Cheese settles over the patties. Two layers of beef, caramelized onions, and sauce disappear beneath a toasted bun.

Two burgers stand on the board.

Only one is mine.

Before I sit down to eat, I wrap the other and place it in a paper bag. The card has given me somewhere to be.

At the butcher’s shop, the bag goes onto the worn wooden block. I press the card onto the vintage ticket stabber.

Then I ring the service bell.

The order is complete. Whoever comes to collect it will find everything where it belongs.

Back at the safehouse, the remaining burger waits on the board.

I take the first bite. The crust gives way beneath the cheese, the onions slipping between the layers. The room settles into the sounds of eating.

For once, someone else might be having the same dinner.

I just don’t know who.

I’ve followed the instructions. I’ll have to wait until another night to find out what that means.
