China's smelters absorb flood of retired EV batteries

In China, as more electric-vehicle batteries face renewal, many of them are headed to the smelters where they'll be stripped of raw materials like copper and aluminum.
At this smelting plant in Yancheng City, east China's Jiangsu Province, used electric-vehicle batteries are broken down and sorted.
Copper and aluminum are first separated, and then the battery powder, rich in lithium, nickel, and cobalt, is fed into a hydrometallurgical production line for deep purification.
Experts say that roughly 40 percent of all used electric-vehicle batteries will be smelted, with that number expected to rise in the coming years.
Some recycling companies are even adding additional production lines to keep up with demand.
"We can recycle 500 to 600 tons of batteries every month. Production lines have been running at full capacity since the second half of last year. A new production line will be put into operation at the end of this year and annual capacity will be over 20,000 tons."
Experts predict there will be 655,000 tons of used electric-vehicle batteries globally, this year, and expect there to be over two million tons in 2030.
