Shanghai gets ready for 'Skills Olympics' with AI cars, green mascots

The final countdown has begun for the 48th WorldSkills Competition, often called the "Skills Olympics", taking place in Shanghai from September 22 to 27.
The giant mascot installations outside Shanghai's National Exhibition and Convention Center were crafted using a stone-spray coloring technique that blends artificial materials with fresh blossoms. Many elements, including the white stones, will be reused for an upcoming trade expo later this autumn to avoid waste.
Inside the venue, leading global tech companies are showing off the future of their industries. One of the biggest highlights is an "AI-native" car by SAIC.
Marking Chinese mainland's first time hosting the world's largest vocational skills event, the competition features 64 distinct skills and welcomed nearly 350 contestants from more than 60 countries and regions to Shanghai on Thursday.
