A Thanksgiving goes awry.

A group of friends has gathered for their annual Friendsgiving dinner. The table is set, the food is cooking and they're all waiting for Will, who is always late. But the jovial atmosphere crumbles momentarily when they discover a zombie has bitten Will.

Everyone knows people have an hour before infection sets in and Will turns into a mindless zombie, and Will is determined to spend his last hour with his beloved friends. But plenty can go awry in an hour...

Directed by Tina Carbone and co-written with Patrick T. Dorsey, this short horror-comedy combines the easygoing warmth and humor of a friendly gathering with a dose of the post-apocalyptic. A group of found family members come together to celebrate the Thanksgiving season, but the happy occasion can't insulate them from an outside world immersed in monsters and terror.

Briskly paced and shot with a warm but shadowy visual coziness, the storytelling leans on excellent dialogue, which crackles with keen social observation and wit as the friends joke, tease and banter with one another. The excellent ensemble cast -- led by actors Will Madden as Will and Hayley Marie Norman as hostess Abby -- conveys a group that knows one another well and sees each other as family. Inside jokes, shared history and a sense of affection invite viewers to sit in like guests at the table. But when Will bursts in, late as usual, and then reveals his zombie bite, the film's dystopian elements seep into the storytelling, revealing a zombie apocalypse, a wide-scale governmental response and the general collapse of society.

The film finds smart, sharp humor in how blase and matter-of-factly the group talks about the breakdown in society, as they've all adjusted to a "new normal," complete with roasted pigeon and Spam cobbled together in the shape of a turkey. Witty parallels are drawn to the pandemic, with references to self-isolation and the panoply of reactions to wide-scale public threats, but those are handled with a certain nimble lightness. Instead, we find ourselves relating to how these kinds of occasions often ask us to willfully ignore the thornier parts of our realities, from the travails of current events to our honest thoughts and feelings.

Ironically, this has the effect sometimes of amplifying loneliness. It's only when the group admits to their vulnerabilities with honesty that they find the comfort in being together, which lands ENDZGIVING an ending with some light but genuinely warm emotional insight, at least before dystopia strikes again.
