直到1880年，法國軍醫拉韋朗在一滴患者的血液中，看見了一個會蠕動、變形的活物。17年後，羅納德·羅斯又在按蚊體內找到了關鍵證據。
人類終於發現：空氣不是兇手，蚊子也不是疾病本身。真正完成這場循環的，是一種能夠在蚊子、肝臟和紅細胞之間不斷轉換身份的寄生蟲。

For thousands of years, people blamed malaria on the 'miasma' rising from the swamps. It wasn’t until 1880 that French army doctor Laveran saw a wriggling, shape-shifting organism in a drop of a patient’s blood. Seventeen years later, Ronald Ross found the key evidence in mosquitoes. Humans finally discovered: air wasn’t the culprit, and mosquitoes weren’t the disease itself. What really completed this cycle was a parasite that could switch identities between mosquitoes, the liver, and red blood cells.
