A New Ocean Is Rising in Africa, and Nobody Can Stop It

Africa is slowly splitting apart as a massive geological rift widens across East Africa, bringing earthquakes, volcanic activity, and a future that could reshape the entire continent. Deep beneath the surface, tectonic forces are pulling the land in opposite directions, stretching and fracturing the crust in one of the most extraordinary geological transformations on Earth. Scientists believe this process could eventually allow seawater to flood the rift and create a new ocean, although that transformation would take millions of years. But the unsettling part is that the ground is already changing, and communities living near active fault lines and volcanoes face real geological hazards today. So how far has Africa’s great split already progressed, and what could happen when this ancient continent begins to separate for good?
