What can a 194-year-old tortoise teach us about ageing? 🐢🧬
This is Jonathan, the world’s oldest living giant tortoise and land animal.
Scientists, including Dr Justin Gerlach from Peterhouse, studied Jonathan’s DNA to find out how his body has kept going for almost two centuries.
The research points not only to unusual genetic variants, but to the way his genes are switched on and off, including processes involved in DNA repair and metabolism.
These findings could help us better understand the biological processes that shape ageing and longevity across species.
