Welcome to the first in a series of six short films by the Open Research team at the University of Cambridge. In this premiere film, we explore how embedding open research throughout the entire research lifecycle can completely transform academic study and empower communities.

We spotlight the groundbreaking work of Professor Jennifer Gabrys, Chair in Media, Culture and Environment at the Department of Sociology and head of the Planetary Praxis Research Group. The film highlights her "Citizen Sense" and "Smart Forest" projects, which showcases how digital technology and open research frameworks allow everyday citizens to become active contributors—rather than passive data points—in studying environmental issues.
This film series is a collaboration between Dr Lutfi Othman from the University of Cambridge Open Research team and Colin Ramsay (Dragonlight Films). This series is funded by the University of Cambridge Enhancing Research Culture Fund, which is administered by the Research Culture team.
