Is this the best job in the natural world?

Matthew Jeffery has been busy gathering plants and seeds in Croatia, South Africa and Chile.

As the Expedition Botanist at Cambridge University Botanic Garden, he arguably has one of the most wonderful jobs on the planet.

But how does collecting plants help save them from extinction?

This film follows his dream role – hunting for seeds and specimens on global trips, from South Africa and Chile to Croatia – walking in Darwin’s footsteps but using modern smartphones to do things quite differently.

It shows how working with other botanic gardens helps create a ‘living collection’ that actively protects biodiversity worldwide.

The idea is simple: different gardens grow different plants, which could one day be used to bring back species lost in the wild.
