The Giant Eagle That Turned Ancient Humans Into Prey

The skies of ancient New Zealand were once ruled by a terrifying predator unlike anything alive today. Haast's eagle, the largest eagle ever known, was a giant eagle powerful enough to hunt massive moa birds that stood several feet taller than a human. Weighing up to 33 pounds with enormous talons and incredible speed, this apex hunter dominated the island's unique ecosystem and became the undisputed king of New Zealand megafauna. Some scientists believe early humans who arrived in New Zealand may have encountered this fearsome bird before it vanished, making it one of the most fascinating ancient predators in history. This video explores the rise and fall of Haast's eagle, its connection to moa extinction, and why renewed interest in extinct animals has brought this legendary giant bird back into the spotlight.
