A woman auditions.

Amanda dreams of becoming an actress. But she has been rejected from drama school multiple times, owing to stiff competition for just a few spots in each program.

When she reaches the final round of consideration by a prestigious program, Amanda knows this is her last chance and is determined to advance, no matter what. But how much -- and who -- will she sacrifice to achieve her dream?

Directed by Johan Stavsjo from a script co-written with Marcus Fahey, this sharply observed short dark comedy is a snapshot of a young woman consumed by ambition and success, capturing how desire and aspiration can curdle into something altogether darker and more unsavory. Amanda grows increasingly desperate as the walls close in on her dream, and that desperation twists into noxious levels of jealousy, self-doubt and competitiveness until it erodes her ideals and values beyond recognition.

Actor Matilda Kallstrom gives a steely performance, whose seemingly controlled surface cracks under increasing anxiety as Amanda awaits her lucky break. Amanda begins the film in a flutter of worry, chatting with her acting classmates as their news trickles in about their acceptances to various drama programs. Amanda summons the grace to congratulate everyone, but at home with her easygoing, supportive boyfriend Caspar, we see how agonized and tortured she is -- and how badly she wants to get in.

The intelligent writing and well-observed directing find humor in the juxtaposition of polite mores and social niceties with the raw emotions that Amanda tries to hide. But we truly see how much her sense of self has been eroded by the actor's life of rejection, obsession and competition when she sits for an interview and cannot even talk about herself on a personal level. She's eager to impress, and it's hard not to sympathize with her in this pressure cooker situation; we feel her anxiety, her emptiness, her crippling self-doubt. We also see how far she's lost herself in the process.

And as AN ARTIST' S SOUL creeps towards its conclusion, we see just how far she will go to achieve her dream. True to the film's naturalism, it's a subtle but disquieting decision, both a betrayal and a genuine sigh of relief -- and in trying to sell it to Caspar and perhaps herself, it may just be the best acting of Amanda's life.
