Mama, a 59-year-old chimpanzee at Royal Burgers’ Zoo in the Netherlands, was gravely ill when her longtime friend Jan van Hooff came to visit her.
At first, Mama seemed unaware that he was there. But when she finally recognized the man she had known for decades, her reaction became incredibly emotional.
Jan had known Mama since 1972, and their final reunion took place shortly before she died in April 2016. Mama was the longtime matriarch of the zoo’s famous chimpanzee colony and played an important role within the group.
A heartbreaking reminder of just how powerful a bond can become after decades of friendship. ❤️
