America’s Worst Maritime Disaster Was Far Worse Than the Titanic

On April 27, 1865, the steamboat Sultana exploded on the Mississippi River while carrying thousands of passengers, many of them Union soldiers who had just survived the Civil War and were finally heading home. The ship was dangerously overcrowded, with nearly 2,000 people crammed aboard despite having room for far fewer, and a series of boiler explosions turned the river into a scene of fire, panic, and unimaginable chaos. More than 1,100 people died, making the Sultana disaster the deadliest maritime disaster in American history, yet it remains far less famous than the Titanic. Behind the tragedy were shocking failures, corruption, and warnings that went unheeded, raising questions about how so many lives could have been put at risk. The Sultana disaster deserves to be remembered as one of the darkest and most devastating shipwrecks in American history.
