We Just Found the Fastest Star in the Milky Way

Some stars are moving so fast that they can leave the Milky Way entirely. These are called hypervelocity stars, and they travel at millions of miles per hour. Instead of orbiting the galactic center like most stars, they are on a one-way trip into intergalactic space. Scientists think some of them were launched by the supermassive black hole at the center of our galaxy, while others may have been thrown out by powerful stellar explosions or unusual gravitational interactions. But every new discovery raises the same question: what could push a star heavier than our Sun to such incredible speeds? Watch this video to find out how these cosmic speedsters were discovered, what forces are sending them across the galaxy, and why their speeds seem almost impossible.
