What does "harmony" really mean in Chinese thought? 🤔
Roger T. Ames 安乐哲, Professor in the Department of Philosophy at PKU, offered American college students participating in the 2026 China Deep Dive program a fresh perspective on one of the most familiar ideas in Chinese culture.
From the many ways Chinese cuisine transforms a finite number of ingredients to li 礼 (ritual propriety) and shu 恕 (empathy), Ames explored harmony as a way of understanding relationships, adapting to others, and creating growth together.
So, what does harmony really mean? Maybe it is not what you think.
