In Front of the Class (2008), adult Brad Cohen has just graduated from college and moves to Atlanta to chase his dream of becoming a teacher.
On paper, he looks like a strong candidate. He has excellent grades, great student-teaching evaluations, and a genuine passion for helping kids. But every interview comes with the same uncomfortable moment.
Brad’s body moves suddenly.
Strange sounds come out before he can stop them.
And every interviewer notices.
Brad calls Tourette Syndrome his “Constant Companion,” because it has been with him since he was six years old. Even when he first arrives in Atlanta, a police officer pulls him over for speeding and immediately suspects something is wrong because of the noises Brad makes. Brad has to explain, just like he has done countless times before, that he has Tourette’s.
When the officer asks what job he is looking for, Brad simply says: teacher.
The reaction is familiar.
People do not understand how someone with uncontrollable tics could stand in front of a classroom.
The film then takes us back to Brad’s childhood. As a boy, he blinked, jerked his neck, and made sounds he could not control. The more nervous he became, the worse it got. Classmates mocked him. Teachers thought he was disrupting class on purpose. One teacher even forced him to apologize in front of everyone and promise to stop making noises — even though Brad knew he could not stop.
His father believed he just needed more self-control.
But his mother, Ellen, refused to give up. She kept searching until she finally found the name for what Brad had: Tourette Syndrome.
For Brad, the diagnosis changed everything.
He was not a bad kid.
He was not doing it on purpose.
And even if the world doubted him, he was determined to prove that Tourette’s would not stop him from becoming the teacher he was meant to be.
