Finding inspiration in art among all the digital noise | Damian Schofield | TEDxSUNY Oswego

Artificial intelligence can now create paintings, films, stories, and other works that are often difficult to distinguish from those created by humans. As these technologies become more common, they are forcing us to rethink some of our assumptions about creativity and artistic expression.

Drawing on his background in artificial intelligence and digital media, Damian Schofield explores how we judge art and why we connect with certain works. He invites us to consider a question that is becoming increasingly relevant: when a piece of art moves us, does it matter who or what created it? Dr. Schofield is Director of Human Computer Interaction (Full Professor) at SUNY Oswego, a role he has held since 2009, and Adjunct Associate Professor of Forensic Computing at Edith Cowan University in Perth, Australia. Previously, he was Associate Professor of Computer Games and Digital Media at RMIT University in Melbourne and Lecturer in Computer Science at the University of Nottingham, UK. He is also Director and major shareholder of Aims Solutions Ltd., a UK company founded in 2000 specializing in computer graphics visualization and virtual reality–based simulation training for public and private sector clients.

For nearly 20 years, his research has focused on the use of digital evidence in courtrooms, particularly virtual reconstructions using computer graphics and game technologies. He studies how visual evidence is represented and understood in legal settings and regularly serves as an expert witness worldwide, including consulting for the FBI.
