남극 앨런힐스(Allan Hills)의 깊이 약 137m 빙하 시추공에 얼음 조각을 떨어뜨리면, 스타워즈 레이저총 같은 "퓨웅~" 소리가 올라옵니다. 얼음이 좁은 구멍 벽에 부딪히며 떨어질 때마다 소리가 나고, 이 소리가 긴 원통 속을 반사되며 올라오는 동안 높은 음과 낮은 음이 도착하는 시간이 달라져서 음이 미끄러지는 듯한 레이저 소리가 됩니다. 이 영상은 2020년 프린스턴대 지구화학자 존 히긴스가 남극 현장에서 직접 촬영해 공개한 것입니다. 이런 시추공은 수백만 년 전 공기가 갇힌 오래된 얼음을 꺼내기 위해 뚫습니다. 실제로 같은 앨런힐스 지역에서 2025년, 약 600만 년 된 얼음과 그 속에 갇힌 공기가 발견되어 옛 지구의 기후를 밝히는 단서가 되고 있습니다.
