The 2026 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit took place in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan.
At the heart of the event is the Kyrgyzstan Congress Center and National Guesthouse, which serves as the main venue for leaders' meetings and multilateral diplomacy.
The project, from design to construction, was completed by teams from Shanghai.
Covering over 14 hectares, the venue blends nomadic cultural elements with modern architectural techniques.
The main hall's dome draws inspiration from the "Tuntuk" – the circular skylight atop traditional yurts – and required a custom-built construction solution.
Shanghai craftsmanship is also evident in the finer details.
Relief murals depicting nomadic life were created using techniques borrowed from the restoration of Shanghai's historic Shikumen buildings.
Located in the heart of Central Asia, Kyrgyzstan was among the first countries to support and participate in the Belt and Road Initiative.
With its mountainous terrain, harsh climate and relatively weak infrastructure, the construction team faced significant challenges.
When they took over the site last year, only a concrete and steel framework existed.
In less than a year, they delivered a completed venue – a testament to Chinese standards and the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits.
The newly opened Bishkek Arena, also built with the participation of Chinese construction teams, is now Central Asia's largest professional football stadium.
Chinese construction is continuously exporting its large-project expertise overseas, creating more benchmark projects for Belt and Road cooperation.
