Extinction was supposed to be forever. But in 2027, scientists are getting closer than ever to bringing some of the world’s most famous EXTINCT animals back to life.
From the woolly mammoth and dodo to the Tasmanian tiger and other long-lost species, researchers are using ancient DNA, gene editing, reproductive technology, and genetic engineering to attempt something that once seemed impossible: reverse extinction.

In this video, we explore 10 EXTINCT animals scientists are trying to bring back, how far each project has progressed, and what these animals could actually look like if they return.
But de-extinction isn't as simple as cloning an ancient animal. Scientists often have to recover fragments of ancient DNA, reconstruct genomes, identify living relatives, edit their cells, and develop new reproductive techniques. In many cases, the resulting animal would be a genetically engineered proxy carrying important traits of the extinct species rather than a perfect genetic copy.

From extinct animals and ancient DNA to de-extinction, cloning, CRISPR, prehistoric creatures, and species scientists hope to revive, the race to make extinction reversible has already begun.
