Harnessing Inspiration to Protect Coral Reefs | Mr. William F. Precht | TEDxSUNY Oswego

In this talk, William Precht reflects on the mentors, moments, and discoveries that inspired his journey from a student at SUNY Oswego to a lifelong career studying coral reefs. Through personal stories of curiosity, exploration, and purpose, he explores how inspiration can spark discovery, influence future generations, and motivate action in the face of environmental challenges. William Precht is an internationally recognized expert in coral reef ecology and geology. His career path was solidified while an undergraduate student at SUNY Oswego. In his senior year, Bill had the opportunity to spend a semester studying at the Discovery Bay Marine Lab (DBML) in Jamaica. Combining his love of both geology and ecology (and scuba diving), Bill performed an independent senior research project on the modern reef communities located directly in front of DBML. This life altering trip set the path for a 40+ year career working on coral reefs and carbonate sedimentary environments worldwide. He lives in Miami Lakes, Florida, is married, and has three daughters. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
