What does it take to become Du Liniang for a day?
For the #ReEncounterwithChineseGlories series, PKU student Jess steps behind the curtain to experience Kunqu Opera 昆曲, from elaborate costumes and dramatic makeup to graceful movements, folding fans, and Kunqu singing.
Guided by Gu Weiying 顾卫英, a National First-Class Performer of Kunqu Opera, Jess discovers that bringing a character to life takes much more than a beautiful costume. Every gesture, expression, movement, and note has to work together.
Two hours of makeup, countless details, and a whole new way of performing later, Jess gets her moment as Du Liniang.
