Shanghai Culture Takes the Stage at Barcelona's La Mercè Festival

On the evening of September 23, Barcelona’s Plaça de Sant Jaume came alive with lights and celebration as the annual La Mercè Festival officially opened.
La Mercè is Barcelona's largest annual festival, attracting around 1.5 to 2 million attendees each year.
Shanghai is the first Asian guest city of honor to be invited.
Shanghai joined the festivities with more than 100 artists, bringing seven programs across 14 performances, along with a series of cultural and tourism exchange activities.
The opening night began with a striking glimpse of Shanghai’s traditional heritage: the Fengxian Rolling Lantern, a national-level intangible cultural heritage with a history of more than 700 years.
The performance, Ancient Lanterns by the Seawall, unfolds in four chapters - “The Spirit Awakens,” “The Dance Renewed,” “Light Through the Ages,” and “Shining into the Future” — creating a dialogue across seven centuries.
On the evenings of September 23 and 24, the Fengxian Rolling Lantern troupe will also parade from Plaça de Catalunya along La Rambla to Plaça de Sant Jaume, bringing a distinctive touch of Shanghai culture into the heart of Barcelona’s urban landscape.
Later that evening, the concert When East Meets West took the stage.
Built around original contemporary jazz, the performance blended the relaxed rhythms of jazz with the piercing, expressive sound of the suona, drawing murmurs of surprise and appreciation from the audience.
Beyond the stage, Shanghai presented a broader portrait of the city’s cultural character and tourism appeal.
Over 60 photos by Chinese and international photographers, selected from IP SHANGHAI's image library, showcase Shanghai's cultural heritage, tourism resources, and urban development.
2026 marks the 25th anniversary of the sister-city relationship between Shanghai and Barcelona.
