Billions of light-years away, lurking just 660 million years after the Big Bang, NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has just imaged an astrophysical anomaly that defies the laws of standard stellar physics. Astronomers analyzing a mysterious, hyper-luminous "little red dot" have officially classified an entirely new type of cosmic object: a "black hole star." Officially named MoM-BH*-1, this ancient leviathan looks like a star, but its core is completely hollow of nuclear fusion. Instead, the object is powered entirely by a central, violently feeding black hole that is cocooned inside an impossibly dense envelope of pure hydrogen.
