Why are China-made NEVs gaining ground in Europe? Belgian reporter visits BYD dealership

China’s annual vehicle exports are on course to surpass 10 million units for the first time, driven by explosive overseas demand for new energy vehicles (NEVs). New data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) shows that 8.2 million vehicles were exported between January and September—a year-on-year surge exceeding 65 percent. NEVs accounted for over half of the total, with more than four million units shipped. Industry leaders attribute this rapid expansion to a fundamental shift from price competitiveness to a complete, vertically integrated electric vehicle ecosystem.

The global footprint of Chinese automakers is expanding rapidly across Europe, South America, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. In Belgium, dealerships report sales nearly quadrupling over two years, with European consumers praising the rich feature sets and all-inclusive pricing offered by brands like BYD. Despite additional EU tariffs of up to 35 percent on Chinese-made electric vehicles, full in-house supply chain control—from battery cell production to final vehicle assembly—continues to give Chinese brands an edge in technological evolution and market responsiveness.
