100,000 German Gen-Z protest underfunded schools, living costs as massive marches reignite France

Thousands of young demonstrators took to the streets across Germany on Saturday as part of a nationwide wave of protests organized by the youth initiative 'Gen Z regelt' (Gen Z Takes Charge). Inspired by recent student-led mobilizations in France, Italy, and Spain, demonstrations were called in more than 30 German cities, including Berlin, Frankfurt, Cologne, and Hannover. Organizers reported that over 160,000 people had registered online to join the marches, demanding increased funding for education, action on rising living costs, affordable housing, and climate protection, while firmly opposing a return to compulsory military conscription.

In Berlin, thousands gathered in front of the historic Brandenburg Gate in a display of European youth solidarity. German organizers emphasized that their rallies were intended to remain peaceful, seeking to distance the movement from the violent clashes and looting seen during recent protests in Paris and Milan. Amid a surging cost-of-living crisis across Europe, the movement highlights growing friction between European youth and government social spending priorities.
