What is actually inside a CV axle, and why is it packed with so much grease?! ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ”ง
In this clip, you get a front-row seat to one of the messiest but most important jobs in automotive maintenance: packing a Constant Velocity (CV) joint!
Your car's CV axles transfer raw power from the transmission to the wheels. Because the front wheels have to bounce up and down with the suspension while simultaneously turning left and right, the axle needs a flexible metal joint. To keep that joint from destroying itself under extreme friction, it is packed with a massive amount of specialized, heavy-duty extreme-pressure grease and sealed inside a ribbed rubber boot. When that boot inevitably tears from road debris, the grease leaks out and the joint begins clicking and failing. Repacking it with fresh lubricant and a new boot can save the entire axle!
