Why Truck Mechanics Use So Much Axle Grease!

If you look at the axles on a heavy-duty commercial truck or a heavy equipment trailer, you will notice they use a very specific type of extremely sticky, brightly colored grease. Unlike normal automotive grease, this blue high-tack lubricant is packed with special chemical additives called "tackifiers."
These additives give the grease a stringy, elastic property. As the heavy wheel bearing spins at highway speeds under thousands of pounds of pressure, normal grease would instantly get flung outward by centrifugal force. The blue tackifiers act like microscopic rubber bands, clinging to the steel rollers to ensure they never run dry! Mechanics will often coat the entire spindle shaft in the stuff to completely seal out water and prevent the bare metal from rusting!
